Hans Wegner’s Egg chair: a mid-century replica in three acts

Posted by Manhattan Home Design on Dec 10th 2018

The popularity of the Egg chair is uncontested, even if considered by some to be one of the weirdest representatives of the mid-century modernist movement. A lot of people want to get their hands on one, but it takes more than just knowledge to make the right decision.

We’ve been saying this for a long time now but you should always try to get your hands on a replica because the market has grown, and they are no longer considered “knockoffs.” Of course, you can get yourself and your wallet to the nearest Herman Miller dealership, but have you seen those price tags?

The different ways you can get an Egg chair replica

Manhattan Home Design has a good reputation for selling mid-century furniture. Their lounge chair is a bit of a hit on the Houzz interior design portal, and their best-selling line includes all of your mid-century goodies: Arco Lamp, Womb chair, Tulip table, etc.

However, we’re here to talk about their Egg chair, manufactured and sold in three distinctive ways. The first is their true-to-design replica ($2,992.50) in red upholstery. Pure PU-injected foam encased in Dacron silk with a fiberglass shell and polished aluminum base. Arne Jacobsen would be proud.

For more adventurous buyers, there’s a leather version baptized as the Glove Leather Lounge chair with Ottoman ($3,211). The original shape is retained on the design, but as the name indicates, it is pure aniline leather with some aesthetic changes to the base and the accompanying ottoman, which rightfully complements the whole design package.

Another choice includes the “Skien” version, which is a gray rendition of the original Egg chair, for the same price. The differences between this one and the other are not specified on the site, so let’s assume they’re just two color choices for the same comfort and quality.

Where do I put mine?

Each and every one of these chairs is living room-friendly, first and foremost. The one with the ottoman, however, might play a very nice role on a large bedroom, as a leisure side chair, or a place to browse the internet for hours on end.

We can’t promise you, however, that an Egg chair will be as comfortable as an lounger, for example. Their concepts are very different. Find out what works for you and exploit it. If you want to learn more about the Egg chair, do some research on Arne Jacobsen, and get a sense of how to place it.
